Diseases will prevail as far as living beings are dwelling on this earth. It is a fact, then be it for us or for our pets. But, the point is, why to unnecessarily invite them or give them chance to trouble us or our pets when they can be easily prevented? In order to do so we must first be aware of those common culprits. So, here are some ailments that our dogs face which can be prevented easily if proper efforts are put in the right direction. Flea Infestation
Fleas are the most common parasites that create nuisance for our pets. These pesky critters bite and suck blood from the dog’s skin and in turn transmit their infected saliva which irritates the skin and leads to itching, Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD), hair loss and hot spots. Sometimes, in the process, they also transmit tapeworms hence leading to worm infection in dogs. In heavy flea infestation, a dog may even suffer from anemia due to blood loss. Though there are many antibiotics, steroids and anti-inflammatory drugs available for the flea treatment, why to let your pet suffer in pain when it can be easily prevented by regularly administering preventatives. Ear Infections Ear infection is another common illness that dogs face. It can be caused due to the presence of mites, bacterial growth or yeast infection. Sometimes the irregular hair growth inside the ear also leads to deposition of bacteria or yeast inside the canines’ ears. A dog with ear infection might show signs like – vigorous scratching near the ear area, head shaking or tilting, swelling near the ear area, redness in ear canal and loss of balance. Preventatives like Revolution and Advocate are quite effective in eliminating the chances of ear mites and must be regularly used to protect your pet from this infection. Worm Infections Dogs can carry worms by birth as most of them inherit these parasites when they are still in the womb. Other than that, worms can also be present in soil, fecal matter of other animals or dirty, moist places which dogs can pick easily while sniffing or exploring such things to eat. Sometimes, worm infection in dogs can go unnoticed and may not reveal any clear signs but you must watch out if your dog’s appetite has changed or he is scooting, has started appearing dull and lifeless. The sooner you notice these signs, the better it would be for his health. Dogs may also vomit if there is heavy worm infection so watch out. Before that stage comes, better start treating your pet every 2-3 months with a wormer. Joint Problems Since our Fidos stay so very active throughout their life, they are bound to face joint issues due to wear and tear over a long time. In some cases, the joints lose their synovial fluid that causes pain and inflammation of joints and in some others the connective cartilage wears of which leads to stiffness in joints. Signs of joint illness in dogs include – swelling near the joints, inability to get up easily, strain while climbing the steps and sluggishness. However, this condition can also be dealt with if actions are taken in advance. To prevent your dog from facing joint pain and mobility issues, start administering joint supplements to your dog from a very young age so he doesn’t have to undergo surgery or lifelong impairment later on. Obesity Obesity is an illness that leads to various other diseases and consequences in pets. Most dogs these days are over fed every day and thus have to deal with illnesses associated with being obese like joint issues, lethargy, heart attack and early collapse. Thus, it is very important to pay attention to what you feed your pet and the quantity of food in each morsel. Provide a well-balanced meal in small portions which is the only way to avoid your pet from getting fat. Most of these common illnesses occur due to the lack of attention from the pet owners therefore, it is imperative to stay cognizant of your pet’s health and his behavior. You must also consider paying regular vet visits because it helps in examining the disease early on, if any, thus making it easy to prevent the diseases from expanding and festering. So, make sure you follow a good health routine for your dog to keep him healthy and disease-free.
