You might have felt that picking out a dog breed would be the most difficult decision you will ever make before zeroing in a dog. But once you have taken that decision, the next important thing to decide is to whether select a male or a female dog. One thing that plays an integral part in the decision making process is the role played by ethnical stereotypes. If men or women have definite ideas about each other, it might project on the animals that is highly inappropriate. There are quite a few generalities which even dog breeders and dog trainers agree on which is the personality differences between individual dogs that is greater difference that exists between the sexes. Let us now look at the criterion that will help you select a male or a female dog: Temperament It has been observed that male dogs require more attention, frisk, and affection from their owners than their female counterparts. While female dogs have been observed to be more independent and consistent towards their human friends. Females can be very loving but after a while they may opt to be on their own, while males like to be pampered and crave for attention from their owners. If own a kitty, female dogs would make a far better choice since their personality attributes are more like a cat especially when you compared them with male dogs. But most of the dog trainers are of the opinion that if you already own a dog, your succeeding one should preferably be of the alternate sex. This is due to the fact that dogs of the same sex are probable to fight. This is also true of females because of the power of their territorial instincts. Hence, it is often said that it is easier to bring two male dogs in collaboration than to have two female dogs sharing the same location. Normally, it has been observed that even if you decide to have your female dogs spayed, they will still not co-exist. Training It is a known fact that female dogs are far easier to train as they are less likely to be distracted. Male dogs love to be goofy and it is very difficult to make them focus on a single thing for long. But when it comes to dog shows and other related events, male dogs have traditionally dominated the titles and prizes. One of the possible reasons for that is male dogs are anxious to delight human beings and this trait makes them get over the inclination to be easily distracted. It might also be a fact that preparing female dogs for competition can be extremely challenging for many as they are not trainable when they are in heat. Male dogs are far serious competitors as they are bred out ceaselessly, while female dogs can normally have puppies on a yearly basis. Perhaps things would turn out to be different if the dogs are spayed or neutered for competitive dogs but that is hardly the case. Children Friendly Any dog can be friendly with children. But some believe that female dogs are a better choice for children as they are more naturally fostering and protective of the infants, even if they are from some other species. Male dogs on the other hand, see children as playmates and this can turn out to be frisky at times. Costs For Neutering / Spaying It has been researched and found that getting a female spayed costs far more than getting a male neutered. Hence, if cost is one of the criterion on which you will be adopting a male / female dog, then go for a male dog. If you are looking for a companion, male dogs are far better choice than females. But if you already own a dog, then the best option would be to go for a intermediate dog of the opposite sex. But ultimately the choice boils down to the relation you feel with an individual dog than anything else.
